A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

A gripping mix of fantasy, history, and romance, this novel features a reluctant witch and a centuries-old vampire who uncover a magical manuscript that could change everything. With its academic setting, rich mythology, and forbidden love story, it’s a natural pick for Outlander fans. And yes, it’s been adapted into a TV show too.

[The book character I’d be best friends with is] Matthew de Clairmont from A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Because of course this would be a platonic friendship right? (It would not.) He's always handy to have around in a pinch, knows his way around fashion, culture and wine, and has a pretty impressive list of friends, which could all be fun. I know he's killed thousands of people, but we all have baggage. - An excerpt from my author interview with Kelley McNeil

Books Similar to Outlander

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Though set in modern times, this deeply emotional love story about a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel, and the woman who loves him, echoes many of the same themes as Outlander. The exploration of love tested by time and circumstance is haunting, heartfelt, and unforgettable.

[The book character I’d be best friends with is] Henry DeTamble, the romantic librarian at the Newberry Library in Chicago [from The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger]. I'd miss him when he time traveled but fascinated by his future and past life when he'd reveal snippets. - An excerpt from my author interview with Judith F. Brenner

Books Similar to Outlander

Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati

Often described as "what happened after Outlander," this series picks up in the late 18th century with Elizabeth Middleton, an Englishwoman who moves to the American frontier. Fans of wilderness by Sara Donati will be thrilled.

Books Similar to Outlander

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley

Though more fantastical, this retelling of the Arthurian legends through the eyes of the women involved offers the same sweeping storytelling and feminist perspective that makes Outlander so unique. It’s an epic love story wrapped in myth and history.

…there is one author who wrote the one book that catapulted my imagination into a whole new realm; a book I've read ten or so times; a novel that from the first read became my favorite book. Not only that, but I have since devoured all her other works.

The author is Marion Zimmer Bradley, and the book is The Mists of Avalon.

There is something about this novel that cracked open a whole new world of creativity for me. I've adored it as a reader, and I've adored it as a writer. I love Morgan Le Fey and the fantasy/fairytale realm, the world-building, and the folklore of King Arthur. I love the feminine focus, the imagery, the layers and layers of storylines, overt and nuanced. My love for this book is hard to put into eloquent words as it has meant different things to me each time I've read it. But she will forever remain one of my favorite authors and The Mists of Avalon will always be my favorite book. - An excerpt from my author interview with Tracy Hewitt Meyer

Books Similar to Outlander

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley

Another gem from Kearsley, this novel tells the story of a grieving woman who finds herself slipping between the present day and the 18th century while staying at an old Cornish house. The evocative setting, time traveler plot, and emotional depth will resonate with fans of Claire’s journey.

Books Similar to Outlander

Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

The second in the All Souls trilogy, this book takes the main characters back in time to Elizabethan England. Like Outlander, it blends a time travel romance with real historical figures and rich period detail.

I absolutely fell in love with Matthew de Claremont, a main character in A Discover of Witches and the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. He’s a vampire, but a nice one and undeniably memorizing and intelligent. We meet and immediately are attracted. When the elevator door finally opens, we go for a drink in a secluded dark corner and he tells me about his childhood growing up in the 6th century France (see, France pops up again) - An excerpt from my author interview with P. L. Jonas

Books Similar to Outlander
