Books Publishing This Week
It’s a bright morning in early July, and the sky is the kind of blue that makes everything beneath it feel more alive. The sun is warm but not too hot yet, and the breeze carries the scent of grass and blooming wildflowers. You’ve found the perfect spot beneath a leafy tree in the park—a quiet patch of green just off the walking path, dappled with shade. You spread out your red gingham picnic blanket, smoothing it down with a small sense of satisfaction. It looks cheerful and classic, like something out of a summer daydream.
You unpack your small picnic with care: a chilled thermos of lemonade, a container of berries still cool from the fridge, a croissant or maybe a little wedge of cheese. Nothing too fancy—just enough to feel a bit indulgent, like you’ve gifted yourself this morning on purpose. And in many ways, you have. Because more than anything, today is about starting your new book.
It’s been sitting on your nightstand or tucked into your tote bag, waiting for the right moment. And this is it. A quiet morning, a picnic for one, sunlight filtering through the branches overhead, and the gentle hum of the radio playing softly beside you. You brought your little portable one—the kind with a slight crackle that only adds to the charm. A local station is playing a mix of easy classics and summer favorites. Something about it makes the whole moment feel cinematic, like you're in the opening scene of a story yourself.
You settle onto the blanket, the grass soft beneath your legs, and open the book. The cover feels cool against your fingertips, and the spine gives just the tiniest creak as you turn to the first page. The story begins quietly—setting the tone, establishing place—but you’re pulled in immediately, your surroundings melting slightly as the world on the page takes shape.
You pause after the first chapter to take a sip of lemonade, the tang of citrus bright against the sweetness of the morning. The music on the radio shifts to something upbeat and nostalgic, and for a moment, you close your eyes and just listen. You hear someone in the distance laughing, a dog barking at a passing squirrel, the wind rustling the trees. And underneath it all, your book waits patiently, resting in your lap like a trusted friend.
You read more. The characters are beginning to bloom—subtle details emerging, backstories hinted at, a mystery or tension beginning to build. You shift slightly, lying on your stomach now, elbows in the blanket, ankles crossed in the air behind you. The grass tickles your arms and the corners of the blanket lift a little with the wind. You tuck them down absently, too caught up in the story to mind.
At one point, a breeze scatters a few pages of your notes or napkins, and you scramble after them, laughing to yourself. The moment feels so full of lightness—like early July has handed you this pocket of time and said, Here. Enjoy. So you do. You pick up where you left off, snack on a handful of berries, and keep reading. Every now and then, you hum along with a song on the radio without even realizing it.
Time slips by gently, the way it does on the best mornings. The sun creeps higher, the shade beneath your tree shifting slightly. You consider staying all day. You could. But for now, you keep reading, the story unfolding in tandem with the soundtrack of summer and the rhythm of a morning that feels like it belongs entirely to you.
You’ve begun a new book under a wide blue sky, on a red gingham blanket, with nothing but time and possibility stretching out before you. And somehow, everything feels just right.

A Bookseller in Madrid by Mario Escobar
An exciting and rigorously documented novel by one of the most translated and read Spanish authors in the world. This hopeful and inspiring story in the face of the horror of intolerance is, above all, an indisputable tribute to literature.
How can the words of the past help heal the horror of the present?
For as long as she can remember, Barbara Spiel has always found solace in books. Born in Germany and having come of age in a tumultuous era, she flees her home country as the Nazis rise to power in the early 1930s. Her destination? Madrid. There she's determined to realize her long-held dream of opening a bookshop and creating a safe haven for young idealists and independent thinkers to come together to transform the world.
Yet Spain isn't immune from its own troubles. The winds of change are blowing through both city and countryside, and it's impossible to predict what will happen. When the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War puts Barbara and everyone around her in peril--including the Spanish Socialist parliamentarian she's fallen deeply in love with--the terror and hatred seem all too familiar. It's like Germany all over again, only with its own cast of extremist characters.
Hounded simultaneously by Stalinist checas, Francoist Facists, and the German Gestapo, Barbara fights to keep her bookstore the safe haven that she's always imagined it would be. But with war brewing both inside Spain and outside its borders throughout the entirety of Europe--and beyond--Barbara isn't sure who exactly she can trust, or if people really are who they claim to be.
A story told with tremendous heart and astonishing historical accuracy, A Bookseller in Madrid is ultimately a story about dreams--dreaming with courage when nothing seems to make sense, and dreaming with hope when words printed on a page are all you can hold on to.

Reports of His Death have Been Greatly Exaggerated by James Goodhand
Due to a case of mistaken identity, everyone believes Ray Thorns to be dead — while he is still very much alive. In the aftermath, he’s forced to reflect on the impact he’s had on the world and those closest to him in this heartbreakingly beautiful look at life and what we would all do if given a second chance, for fans of Dead Poets Society and It’s a Wonderful Life and readers of Fredrik Backman.
A lifetime ago, Ray “Spike” Thorns was a well-regarded caretaker on a boarding school's grounds. These days, he lives the life of a recluse in a house rammed with hoarded junk, alone and disconnected from family or anyone he might have at one time considered a friend.
When his next-door neighbor drops dead on Spike’s doorstep, a case of mistaken identity ensues: according to the police, the hospital, the doctors—everyone—Spike is dead. Spike wants to correct the mistake, really he does, but when confronted with those who knew him best, he hesitates, forced to face whatever impression he’s left on the world. It’s a discovery that brings him up close to ghosts from his past, and to the only woman he ever loved.
Could it be that in coming face to face with his own demise, Spike is able to really live again? And will he be able to put things straight before the inevitable happens—his own funeral?
This is the best kind of feel-good fiction: it’s deeply affecting but full of clever mishaps and enough laughs along the way. It takes the message from Dead Poets Society and mixes it with the tragedy of It’s A Wonderful Life and tops it off with an ultimately loveable guy like in A Man Called Ove. The result is a heartbreakingly beautiful look at life and what we would all do if given a second chance.

American Sky by James Grady
For the teenaged Luc, his days are preoccupied with the daily dramas of high school. President John F. Kennedy's assassination seems a world away. But the winds of history find their way to his small Montana town as marijuana clouds rise in the hallways and the notices of neighborhood young men "Killed in Action" in Vietnam keep arriving at an increasing rate.
Acclaimed novelist James Grady's American Sky brings to life the world of a young man who is caught in the nexus of vast social change. From blue-collar life in the heartland to Kent State and the Civil Rights movement, American Sky is a sweeping narrative that builds to a crime that threatens to tear Luc's world apart. Previously compared to Larry McMurtry, George Orwell, Harper Lee, and Bob Dylan, James Grady explores Bruce Springsteen's generation and has crafted an action-filled and timeless story destined to become a classic.
