Author Interview - Patrick O'Dowd

Author of A Campus on Fire

When a shocking death rocks the exclusive writing program at a prestigious campus, a student journalist, Tess Azar, sets out to discover the truth. Rumors abound of the writing program’s cultish atmosphere and its zealous members, who will stop at nothing to ensure the sanctity of their own secrets. As an extreme right-wing student group swells in numbers, Tess finds herself in the crosshairs, dangerously at the center of the growing chaos. Simmering with tension, this provocative novel portrays the nation’s current-charged political climate, highlighting the immovable structures of our society and the dangers of navigating a post-truth world.

Author I draw inspiration from:

I draw inspiration from Patricia Highsmith, particularly her creation of Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley (and subsequent novels). Highsmith's ability to craft complex, morally ambiguous characters who navigate intricate psychological landscapes has deeply influenced my writing. Tom Ripley, with his enigmatic persona and intricate manipulations, exemplifies the depth of human complexity and the duality of morality. Highsmith's exploration of identity, ethics, and the human psyche resonates in my portrayal of characters who grapple with their own moral compasses amidst challenging circumstances.

And her books are so damn readable—I never want to put them down. The tension and propulsive language in her prose are simply brilliant.

Favorite place to read a book:

My living room, where I have a comfortable chair. If I'm lucky, one of my cats will curl up with me and take a nap.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

George Smiley from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (and many other fine novels) by John le Carré.

Smiley’s calm, measured demeanor would transform the confined space into a stage for his subtle wit and incisive observations. He might start with a quiet, dry remark about the absurdity of the situation, and before long, we’d be discussing the intricacies of human nature, trust, and the art of deception—topics that have defined his career. His thoughtful insights and understated humor would make even this unexpected delay feel like a private lesson in the complexities of life and espionage, leaving me both amused and inspired.

That, or he'd turn me into an asset!

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

I've always had a knack for dreaming up stories. As a kid, I had complex, ever-expanding fantasies that went on for years. I think the idea of being a writer was born during trips to the library with my mom. Despite this early passion, I became quite skilled at finding excuses not to write—procrastination was my specialty. It wasn't until I got sober and decided what I wanted my life to look like that I finally swapped my excuses for a keyboard.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Hardback: I appreciate their classic and substantial feel. The weight and how they sit on the shelf add to their appeal.
Paperback: More portable and easier to handle, though they can crease easily. But there's something satisfying about a well-worn paperback that feels familiar and loved.
Ebook: I haven't engaged much with e-books, as I prefer the physicality of traditional books or the multi-tasking capabilities of an audiobook.
Audiobook: I'm an audiobook enthusiast, often listening while doing something else—cooking, cleaning, driving. It requires practice to absorb the material, but once mastered, it's a wonderful way to enjoy books. And the reader can really make all the difference. It's a true art form.

The last book I read:

I recently finished Everybody Knows by Jordan Harper and was thoroughly impressed. The novel's intricate plot and atmospheric depiction of Los Angeles reminded me of Chinatown, one of my all-time favorite films. Harper masterfully weaves a tale of corruption and moral ambiguity, capturing the essence of classic noir while infusing it with contemporary relevance. It was at times funny, at times thrilling, and never dull.

Pen & paper or computer:

I prefer writing on my computer. I use multiple monitors—one for my draft and another for my outline and research. This setup helps me maintain focus and flow while keeping everything organized. I draft straight through without editing, jotting down notes on characters and plot points as I go. Interestingly, the act of noting these points often solidifies them in my memory, reducing the need to consult my notes later. Once the initial draft is complete, I embark on the editing phase. While I once dreaded this part, I've grown to love it—polishing the manuscript and seeing all the elements come together is incredibly rewarding.

Also, my handwriting borders on illegible even to me, so that isn't much of an option.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Ford Prefect from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

I like to think I'd be fast friends with Ford because he combines irreverent humor with a boundless sense of adventure. His laid-back, witty nature in the face of cosmic chaos is both refreshing and oddly inspiring. Ford sees the absurdity of life as something to be enjoyed rather than feared, and his resourcefulness means he’s always ready for whatever unexpected twist comes his way. I’d love to share in his spontaneous journeys through the universe, where every day is filled with humor, curious exploration, and a reminder not to take life too seriously.

Then again, I think he'd wear me out pretty quickly. I do like to travel, but also love relaxing at home.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

I imagine I might make a decent history professor. I am obsessed with history. I love large, comprehensive biographies and volumes on historical epochs. I would thoroughly enjoy sharing my passion for history with students.

My dad is a teacher, and I've always admired his passion and dedication to his work. I respect how he brings science to life and inspires his students, and I’d love to do the same. My dad has always been an inspiration to me, and his work as a teacher is a large part of that.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

The 50s and early 60s. I love the timeless elegance and sophistication of that era—probably thanks to watching Mad Men one too many times.

Place I’d most like to travel:

Prague. I’m drawn to Prague for its rich literary and cultural history. It's a city steeped in history, from Kafka’s haunting presence to its pivotal role in the Velvet Revolution. Prague's enchanting mix of historic architecture, vibrant art scenes, and storied past creates an inspiring atmosphere. I have a novel in progress that begins there, so it would be nice to feel the city under my feet.

My signature drink:

I've been sober for a long time, so I don't drink alcohol. I do enjoy a good cup of black coffee and a bit of tea with lemon, but on a hot day, nothing beats a cool, clean glass of water.

Favorite artist:

I’m a big admirer of Randy Newman. His clever songwriting, distinctive voice, and satirical take on everyday life really resonate with me. His music manages to be both humorous and deeply insightful, capturing the quirks of modern society in a way that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking. I laugh at some, dwell on others, and cry every time I hear "Feels Like Home."

Number one on my bucket list:

Learning to ride a motorcycle.
I've always been fascinated by the freedom and thrill of the open road. Mastering the art of motorcycle riding, feeling the wind on my face, and experiencing that rush of adventure is something I’m hoping to do.

Anything else you'd like to add:

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me and my work. I'm excited about the adventures ahead, both in my writing and in life, and I appreciate every opportunity to share my stories with readers.
