Author Interview - Angela Brown

Author of Some Other Time

A hopeful, funny, and untraditional love story about second chances, the ripple effects of love, and the myriad ways in which the simplest lives have the power to change the world.

The next step in Ellie Baker’s marriage: divorce. She and her husband, Jonah, are heading to Florida to break it to the family. No great drama to share. After twenty years of marriage, they’ve just fallen out of love. Simple.

Not to their college-age daughter, Maggie, who is devastated. Or to Ellie’s father, Frank, who grows as cold as a retiree can get in Orlando. As for Ellie’s mother, Bunny: no, no, no. She doesn’t want to hear it. After a dreadful weekend, Ellie and Jonah return home to New Jersey with hearts and minds still set on a split. Until the extraordinary morning Ellie wakes up to an alternate version of the present day―one in which she, and a passing stranger named Jonah, never married.

Over the span of an inexplicable week, Ellie sees how her world―and the world of everyone she loves―unfolded through a different course in time. And this time could change everything all over again.

Author I draw inspiration from:

It really depends which project I'm working on. I feel like each of my books, I end up looking to totally different authors/works for inspiration.

Favorite place to read a book:

In bed or at the beach

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Peter Pan (J.M. Barrie's original telling of the story) -- I'm a sucker for kid stories and fairy tales, plus he'd definitely know a way to get us out of the elevator :)

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

Not a specific moment, just that I've wanted to be one forever -- literally as far back as my memory can stretch.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Okay, this is a very weirdly specific answer. I prefer hardbacks in winter and paperbacks in summer (because they're easier to fold back while at the pool/beach). I also JUST got my first Kindle for Christmas, and I have to say I kind of love it for nighttime reading. I only do audiobooks while listening to YA (which I love) or nonfiction. Adult fiction I really like to see the words on the page.

The last book I read:

I'm currently rereading Elizabeth Gilbert's BIG MAGIC and reconsidering a lot of her ideas about where creativity comes from, how to capture it, etc.

Pen & paper or computer:

I plan, outline and take notes by hand (and always in a very specific type of notebook). When I'm actually writing, though, I absolutely have to do it on the screen. I really like to see how the whole page looks while I'm writing it.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

Honestly, probably one of my own protagonist's (Olivia from my first novel, OLIVIA STRAUSS IS RUNNING OUT OF TIME) and/or Ellie (SOME OTHER TIME). I draw a lot of inspiration from myself and my own life when I create my main characters, so I'd definitely get along with them.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

Probably something in film (so still storytelling)

Favorite decade in fashion history:

1920s--glitz, glamor & flappers!

Place I’d most like to travel:

Back in time...does that count?

My signature drink:

Alcohol is margarita (always and forever), non-alcohol is grapefruit seltzer!

Favorite artist:

Mary Blair - she was one of the first female animators for the Walt Disney Company and is one of my creative heroes!

Number one on my bucket list:

I'm not sure that it's #1 (ha!) but I'd like to explore writing in some different genres in the near future for fun
