Author Interview - Robert Bailey

Author of The Boomerang

THE BOOMERANG is a conspiracy thriller where the United States government is covering up the cure for cancer and a rogue chief of staff figures out the truth after learning his daughter has terminal cancer. In order to save her life, he blackmails the President to obtain the miracle medicine and flees to New Mexico where he and his family come under the protection of a ruthless land baron that the government is afraid of.

Author I draw inspiration from:

Michael Connelly. Love them all, but particularly the Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller novels.

Favorite place to read a book:

The beach.

Book character I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with:

Jack Reacher. Killing Floor (and many others), from author Lee Child. I hate elevators, but Reacher would use his skills and strength to get us out in a few minutes. Then we'd have a victory beer at a dive bar and talk about his many adventures...and maybe a few of mine. Somewhere, in there, we'd toast Detective Roscoe and the General, Helen Lewis.

The moment I knew I wanted to become an author:

Not sure if there was a singular moment, but after taking a creative writing class my senior year of college, I knew I wanted to write a novel.

Hardback, paperback, ebook or audiobook:

Love them all and have used them all. My favorite is a paperback as my hands are a tad arthritic from all the typing and they are easier to hold. Have listened to many audio books while driving to meetings and hearings in my former life as a lawyer. I don't read many e-books, but I'm so grateful for them as so many readers enjoy that option. I can't really think of anything I dislike. The price of hardbacks can be steep at times, and the narrator for some audiobooks can make or break the story. Other than that, bring them all on. Ha!

The last book I read:

The Locked Door, Freida McFadden. The novel was fastmoving, had a main character with a haunting past and ended with a shocking twist. The story had everything I'm looking for in a thriller. McFadden is one of my favorites.

Pen & paper or computer:

Computer. One of the most important classes I took in high school was typing. To be able to transmit words to screen without having to look at my hands allows me the freedom to create. I will occasionally write longhand when I'm brainstorming or taking notes on a project.

Book character I think I’d be best friends with:

This is an interesting question, because a lot of my favorite characters in fiction are loner types, like Bosch and Reacher, who don' t have many friends. I think I'd choose Penn Cage from The Quiet Game (and many others) by Greg Iles. Penn seems like the most approachable of the characters I enjoy. He's also a writer and a lawyer, so we'd have much to talk about.

If I weren’t an author, I’d be a:

A lawyer and a mediator. While I've retired from practicing law to focus on writing, I am a registered mediator and continue to mediate cases. I really enjoy the process of mediation, where you help parties to a lawsuit attempt to reach a resolution.

Favorite decade in fashion history:

The 80's. Enjoy the music more than the fashion, but I guess they go hand in hand. Ha!

Place I’d most like to travel:

Hawaii. It's just such a beautiful place, and I think I would enjoy the salt air and the vibe. I'd get me a Detroit Tigers cap and a Hawaiin shirt, and, for just a few days, I'd pretend I was Thomas Magnum...albeit without the Ferrari. But maybe you can rent a Ferrari in Hawaii?

My signature drink:

Black coffee in the morning. I drink it every day. And I love a good victory beer after turning in a draft or celebrating some other small success. Or after Jack Reacher and I bust out of a trapped elevator--Ha!

Favorite artist:

Elvis Presley is the first name that comes to mind. An amazing talent, and the inspiration for a story I'm currently working on.

Number one on my bucket list:

Watching the premier of a movie or tv show based on my novel. It hasn't happened yet, but I dream about it every day.

Anything else you'd like to add:

I love what I do. I love stories, and to be able to create my own and have people read and enjoy them is a dream come true.
